Paul Campbell – busy filming!
April 21, 2016
Business entrepreneur Paul Campbell has taken on some interesting and challenging work since setting up his drone photography company Aerpas, including one project about the history of Irish dog breeds.
The past few months have certainly been interesting having been hired to work on a new documentary series for TG4 discovering the stories of native Irish dog breeds.
The show ‘Madraí Éireannacha (Irish Dogs) is being produced by Ripple World Pictures and it has been a great experience travelling around Ireland learning about the different breeds. The 12 part series tells the story of why dogs such as Irish Wolfhounds, Red-Setters and so on were bred through archive and dramatic reconstructions from Irish history, myths and legends.
My task was to capture drone photography of the dogs in their own environments, which took to me to Cork, Galway, Wexford, Cavan and a lot of other places in between.
We shot drone footage of Irish wolves at a sanctuary in Cork, water dogs at work out on the water and hounds hunting in open fields. Following the dogs around in changing landscapes and different environments with a drone was a challenging job.
I have dogs myself at home but I wouldn’t have known half as much as I do now having worked on the production. The story is fascinating and I’m really looking forward to seeing the show when it airs later this year.
Ripple World Films produce great work and I prevoiusly worked with them on ‘Super Fit Seniors’ which is currently being broadcast on Setanta TV. It’s presenter Eamon Coghlan meets Ireland’s oldest competitive atheltes in their 70’s and 80’s and discovers their secrets to performing at a high level.
One of the six inspirational stars of the show is cyclist Kevin Sims (84). I travelled to Kildare last year to film Kevin in action and you can see how all of that turned out in episode five of the show will be broadcast over the next fortnight.
I also enjoyed filming fellow Nissan Generation Next ambassadors Paul and Gary O’Donovan as part of a series of promotional videos for Nissan Generation Next. We got some beautiful aerial shots of the two brothers rowing in Cork. You can view the film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYHoNoQNQN0
My next project is taking me to the West of Ireland and other locations for a couple of months. I am filming limestone sites at 55 locations as part of a research project being undertaken by the Geographical Society of Ireland. You can’t beat the West of Ireland during the summer so I’m looking forward to shooting some spectacular scenery.
